This webinar will provide a brief overview of pediatric spiritual care assessments and interventions and highlight some of the complexities of providing care with this population. We will review some of the current research literature from the field and have ample time for discussion and questions.
Webinar Objectives:
- Provide a brief overview of pediatric spiritual care and definitions of commonly used terms.
- Describe some of the complexities of pediatric spiritual care and the impact of human developmental theories on the provision of care for patients, parents and caregivers, and siblings.
- Acknowledge some of the spiritual needs of clinical staff providing care in an inpatient pediatric setting.
- Review some of the primary research literature from the field of pediatric chaplaincy and some suggestions for best practices.

Presenter Information
Rev. Richard (Rick) Bauer, MM, BCC, MSW is a Roman Catholic priest with the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers and has been a Board Certified Chaplain with the National Association of Catholic Chaplains since 2018. He also holds a Master’s degree in Social Work. After 25 years in East and southern Africa with adult and pediatric HIV care and support, and integrating spiritual care into palliative care service provision, Fr. Rick is now on staff at the George Washington University Institute for Spirituality and Health (GWish) as an ISPEC (Interprofessional Spiritual Care Education Curriculum) Faculty Member, a faculty member at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and provides clinical chaplaincy services at the George Washington University Hospital and Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC. Fr. Bauer is on the Executive Committee for PallCHASE, Palliative Care in Humanitarian Aid Situations and Emergencies.
