2025 Professional Webinar: Intersectionality of Chaplaincy & Human Trafficking

Webinar Overview:

  • Define Human Trafficking, types of trafficking, data, and “de-mything” common misconceptions
  • Human Trafficking Awareness Month
  • Survivor Advocate Story and her experience with a chaplain
  • Advocacy, research and resources available

Objectives:

  1. Understanding Human Trafficking and How You Can be an Advocate - Equip chaplains with an introductory understanding and build awareness of human trafficking, including its definitions, types, prevalence, and the psychological and physical impact on victims. This knowledge will support chaplains in recognizing the signs and various different types of trafficking in various contexts.
  2. Developing Trauma-Informed Care Approaches - Train chaplains to apply trauma-informed care principles when interacting with potential or identified trafficking survivors, including use of PEAR tool. This includes fostering a safe, supportive environment that promotes healing and respects the autonomy and dignity of survivors.
  3. Strengthening Collaborative Response Efforts - Enhance chaplains' ability to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals, social workers, law enforcement, and community organizations. This objective focuses on building a multidisciplinary approach to support trafficking survivors through appropriate referrals, advocacy, and holistic care strategies.

Presenter Information

Emily Southerton is an Administrative Fellow in the Mission Track at CommonSpirit Health. With over seven years of progressive experience in health care and spiritual care, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Aquinas College and a Master’s in Theology from Villanova University. As a servant leader, she effectively integrates formation leadership resources with colleagues in operations and related fields. Her commitment to mission-driven health care stems from her belief in the healing power of the human spirit and the importance of connecting with the community.

Emily’s career responsibilities include supporting mission integration within acute care facilities, a member of the Internal Review Board, facilitating and coordinating formation for the California region and the National System team, and contributing to the chaplaincy board certification committee. She also engages in leadership development and has previously worked as a teacher in Livi Ukraine.

She is a member of the Catholic Health Association, the Health Care Anchor Network, and the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. Emily and her husband, Erik, relocated to Los Angeles, California, in July 2023 for the fellowship, having previously lived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. She enjoys hiking, traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
